The Red Shirt Protests in Bangkok 2010
On The 12th March 2010 anti-Government protesters from across Thailand descended on the capital, Bangkok, to call for the Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, to dissolve the Government and to call for early elections. The anti- Government protesters know as the “Red Shirts” who are mainly rural Thai’s have historically supported former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thanksin who, after 5 years in power, was ousted in a military coup supported by the political elite in 2006. Thaksin was accused of corruption and abuse of power and subsequently fled the country. Many still believe that Thaksin plays an influential political role by supporting the “Red Shirt” activities. The Red shirts argue that the current government was installed by the military and not democratically elected. The Government is supported by the “Yellow Shirts” who are the social and political polar opposite of the red shirts, they are urban middle class Thais and where responsible for street protests in 2006 which led to the coup which ousted Thanksin. 41 images.
